Everything You Need to Know About IV Nutritional Therapy

With all of the options out there for improving our health, it’s sometimes easy to overlook the most important: proper nutrition. Nutrients are absolutely essential to your wellbeing. All the exercise, rest, and proper precautions against illness won’t help you if your body isn’t receiving the nutrients it needs. And most of us just aren’t getting enough from our diets. That’s why IV nutritional therapy has become so popular, both among people who are suffering from a wide array of ailments and healthy individuals who simply know they can improve their wellbeing even further.

What is IV Nutritional Therapy?

IV nutritional therapy is exactly what it sounds like: it’s a procedure designed to provide the body with an influx of nutrients intravenously. Instead of taking nutrients orally – through food or supplements – patients receive them through an IV. In this regard, the actual setup is almost identical to any other involving an IV drip. The only difference is that in this situation, the setup is delivering a high dose of essential nutrients.

Though it’s not a new treatment, IV nutritional therapy has grown in popularity in recent years as more and more celebrities have talked about its benefits. Just some of the many stars who use IV drips to boost their nutrients include Adele, Chris Brown, Chrissy Teigen, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and John Legend. However, unlike so many treatments and protocols that celebrities favor, IV nutritional therapy is affordable.

What Happens to Your Body During IV Nutritional Therapy?

In many ways, your body reacts to IV nutritional therapy the same way it would to any other IV treatments. The solution is delivered directly into your veins from a bag that hangs overhead. This intravenous delivery means your body is able to absorb the payload of nutrients much more quickly than if you simply consumed them. As a result, your body is also able to make use of these nutrients much faster than if they had to travel through the stomach first.

What is IV Nutritional Therapy Used to Treat?

Traditionally, IV nutritional therapy has been a reliable approach to reversing dehydration. It’s also become a popular method for addressing deficiencies in:

Vitamins/Minerals/Amino Acids/Antioxidants

However, as a wide range of ailments can be caused by such deficiencies, IV nutritional therapy has been used to combat countless problems. It’s also popular among people who simply want to “hack” their biochemistry. They don’t necessarily feel any negative symptoms, per se, but they know they could experience much greater energy levels with the right IV nutritional treatment.

Others use IV nutritional therapy as a preventative measure. Practices all across the country have become accustomed to full waiting rooms as the cold-and-flu season approaches. Many people also use this therapy as a precaution against much more severe diseases.

Here’s a list of common reasons patients seek IV nutritional therapy:

  • Adjunct cancer care
  • Anxiety
  • Autoimmune problems
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Cellular metabolism
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Chronic migraines
  • Cognition
  • Dementia
  • Dermatologic conditions
  • Digestion
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Heavy metal toxicity
  • Increased detoxification
  • Infections
  • Jet lag
  • Lyme disease
  • Memory
  • Mold exposure
  • Mood stabilization
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Recovery from regenerative procedures

3 Potential Benefits of IV Nutritional Therapy

As you can tell from the list above, intravenous nutritional therapy can be used to treat a long list of problems and even improve an already healthy body in a number of ways, too. It all depends on the individual.

However, no matter what your reason may be for considering this incredible treatment, here are the three benefits of IV nutritional therapy that you can count on enjoying:

1. A Higher Dosage of Nutrients Can Be Delivered

What draws most people to IV nutritional therapy is that your body can accept a much higher dose of nutrients intravenously than it ever could orally. As one report on IV nutritional therapy put it:

“Intravenous administration of nutrients can achieve serum concentrations not obtainable with oral, or even intramuscular (IM), administration.”

In this way, it’s not so different from the benefit of taking supplements. While many people take them for convenience, others want to know they are supplying their bodies with as much of a nutrient as possible.

For example, B12 can help with everything from red blood cell generation to mood stabilization to energy production. However, most people don’t want to eat enough eggs, liver, kidneys, seafood, or beef every day to make sure they’re getting enough of this essential vitamin. They’d rather make sure they’re hitting their RDAs with supplements.

IV nutritional therapy can go far beyond what any supplement could deliver. In fact, doses are often referred to as “cocktails”, a reference to how one IV bag can contain a massive payload of numerous nutrients all at once. Furthermore, the intravenous method of delivery ensures patients don’t experience any stomach upset from such a large influx of nutrients. If you regularly take supplements, you’ve probably noticed that your stomach doesn’t always react well to them. Maybe you’ve even had to stop taking some because of this reaction. You won’t have that problem with an intravenous supply.

2. Absorption is Faster and More Effective

We’ve already touched on the speed at which your body can absorb nutrients when they’re delivered intravenously. As with medicine, your body can absorb nutrients much faster when an IV is used to inject them directly into the bloodstream.

That benefit alone has been enough for most people to consider IV nutritional therapy. However, it’s also important to consider how bypassing the stomach can also ensure your body is able to make better use of this higher payload, as well. Most people take for granted that their stomach automatically optimizes the nutrients they consume. After all, why would your body reject nutrients that it needs to help it heal, fight off disease, and perform at its best?

In short, it’s because stomach malabsorption is a major problem. For any number of reasons, many people – may be even most – aren’t getting the full benefit of the nutritious foods they eat. Their stomachs can’t absorb all the nutrients they receive. So, even though you do everything to eat healthily, it may not always feel like it if your body is having issues with absorption. By supplying your body with necessary nutrients intravenously, you don’t have to worry about malabsorption getting in the way.

3. Customized Nutritional Treatments

Finally, most people simply aren’t equipped to understand where they might be nutritionally deficient.

Yet, no one can be completely certain they’re getting enough of it. Even if they believe their intake is low, they can only guess at how much more they need. Then, there’s the problem of absorption that we brought up earlier.

At my practice, I start off with a consultation to ensure I completely understand your needs. Often, I pick up on nutrient deficiencies that patients never even knew they had. For instance, many suspect they’re low in vitamin C, but I’ll also give them a potent dose of amino acids, and glutathione.

Is IV Nutritional Therapy Safe?

Doctors have been recommending intravenous nutritional therapy to their patients since the 50s. The procedure was actually pioneered by John Myers, MD, a physician from the world-renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

His recipe for the therapy, which is referred to as the Myers’ Cocktail, consisted of calcium, vitamin C, B vitamins, and magnesium. Since then, countless other versions have been created to address specific needs. Along the way, some side effect has been linked to intravenous nutritional therapy. As long as you work with a qualified physician and disclose your health history to them beforehand, the procedure doesn’t carry any more risks than other IV treatments.

What Happens During IV Nutrition Therapy?

Despite the fact that IV nutritional therapy is safe, I take every precaution at our practice to make sure that each patient will receive the best possible result from their session.

That’s why I always begin with new patients by completing a formal consultation. This is when you can share with me your reasons for seeking IV nutrition therapy and your medical history. It also gives me an opportunity to assess if there are any other deficiencies we can address with treatment, even if you’re not currently aware of them. To ensure I have all the information I need to best serve you, I ask that you bring certain lab-test results with you for my review if you have done any recently, or we can run the lab test in our office.

Once the consultation is complete, your skin will be prepped with disinfectant to guard against the risk of infection.

Then, I’ll simply locate a vein on your arm and insert an IV catheter or butterfly needle that’s connected to your nutrient dosage. There is usually a little pain at first – as with any injection – but it usually dissipates immediately.

After I’ve adjusted the IV for the ideal rate of flow, I’ll leave you to relax. You can read a book, listen to your headphones, pass the time on your phone, etc. I’ll check back regularly to make sure you’re still comfortable.

That’s really all there is to it.

Depending on your unique needs, we may schedule further appointments in the future.
